| Na na / De de |
My first daughter's sign for nurse was patting her chest on one side. Then she called it "Na na" for a long time. Then she started calling it "De de" (which is a filipino term) and since I have tried to get her down to just nursing during nap and bed time, she now refers to it as "sleeping de-de". She is 2 years and 4 months now and shares me with her 4 mth old sister. |
| Na-na |
I have 2 breastfed children..Patrick (now 3) nursed until he was 2, and Clare is still going strong at 15 months. Both of them called it Na-na. In fact, Clare's first 2 word combination was "more Na-na"! |
| Naaaks |
My daughter (almost 2 years old now), calls nursing "Snacks." It comes out more like "naaacks" when she says it. If we ask her if Daddy has snacks, she laughs and says "nooooo, mama "naaacks." It is especially cute when she sees another mother and baby nursing - she will say, "ohhhhhhh, baby "naaacks!" Yesterday she was carrying her baby doll around up at her chest level, and when I asked her if she was hugging her baby, she said, "No! "Naaacks!" |
| Nainah |
Hi, my son (33 mos) started off using "nainah" for any food. I think I sort of facilitated using nainah for nursing, but that's what he uses now, along with "uh side" when he wants to switch sides. |
| Nammie/Nammies |
My two older daughters were breastfed until well into toddlerhood. They would call my breasts "nammies" and would ask to "drink nammie". Now they will often remind me to give their baby sister some "nammie". |
| Nana / Boob / Titty |

| Nana / Other Side |
My youngest son, who is nearing four, nursed till he was three. I called it "Nana" for him to give him a word, and thats what he called it, although I used to ask him while nursing if he wanted the other side. Then he started asking for "Other Side" as a way to initiate nursing! Instead of Nana, it became "I want Other Side!" Cute. Amazing what they can pick up as you talk with them during that precious time with them! |
| Nanies / Ma-mas / Mum-mums / Nay-nays |
I have five children ages 11 years down to 11 months. The youngest is of course still nursing, she calls it "Nanies". The others nursed for different lengths of time from 15 months to 3 years. They all had their own different names for nursing too. "Ma mas" , Mum Mums" , "Nay Nays", and "Dee Dees". I have to say I find it fascinating that each child comes up with their own word, that there are so many similar and yet unique names for nursing the world over!! In our house things can even get a bit ugly when a new sibling begins to use a word for nursing that the last nursling doesn't approve of because it wasn't his or her word. Eventually they decide that it's OK that each has their own word for their special time with mom. |
| Nar Nar |
My daughter started making this sound at a very young age when she wanted to feed. Naturally, it evolved to our word for nursing. It wasn't long until we began using sentences like "It's time for nar nar". |
| Ne Ne |
My two year old Andrew calls it Ne Ne when he wants to nurse. |
| Nee-nee-naw-nees |
My daughter who was breastfed until 2 1/2 yrs. old called it her "nee-nee naw nees". |
| Ni-ni |
My two babes call breastfeeding "ni-ni" which is milk in babytalk chinese ... this secret code only backfires on us when we go to a Chinese restaurant or other places "Chinese" ... but usually I just get an understanding nod and smile. Many country folk in China still breastfeed their babies, carry their babies, and sleep with them, and consider their precious treasure a 24 hour affair ... as soon as they are old enough (to go to school) kiddies have to start pulling some of their own. After four our five generations here in Canada, "modern city life" prevails, all is forgotten, and we'll unfortunately get a rap on the knuckles for spoiling our babes ;-( Sam breastfed for 18 months and gave up his ni-ni for his "moi-moi" baby sister. Kate is still drinking "this side, or that side ni-ni, or wet ni-ni" at 19 months plus. |
| Ni-night |
My first child weaned himself at 13 months so never referred to it as anything. My second child I weaned while I was pregnant when she was 2.5 yrs. At first she referred to it as ni-night, I assume because whenever I'd ask her if she wanted to go ni-night (as in to bed) we would nurse. When she got older she would come to me and ask to ni-night, if I didn't respond immediately she'd announce angrily "I need nurse"! I am currently nursing my third child who is 11 mo and I'd like to introduce signing to her (I never did with my others and regret it), but I can't find a sign for breastfeeding. Do you know one? |

My son called it nigh night juice! |
