Term Definition
Seece / Sideys

Hi Jane,

first time on your website (I'm a bit slow....) and it looks great. Thanks! I'm a longtime LLL Leader in Oregon.

My first child dubbed nursing "seece" - I assume that's what she heard or the only way she could say it at age one. Thankfully it stuck so we could be discreet for years!

My next one called it "sideys" - and she claims to remember not liking a particular side once it got wet, so she would request to change sides - hence, sideys.

1 is now married, working and pregnant and #2 is in college. Both are weaned! Hang in there, dear mothers of nursing toddlers.

Thanks for an interesting column.

Sheh

no idea where this came from, but that's what my now 2 1/2 year old called it. She quit nursing on her own, when I was six months pregnant.

Side

I had read/heard stories about little ones shouting out embarrasing names for it before my daughter could talk, so I very intentionally taught her to call it "Side". It's very easy to ask her "Do you want a side?", or for her to call out "SIDE!" without embarrassing anyone, including myself. And when she finishes the first, she does ask for "other side".

Side (2)

Like Jen, my daughter also called nursing "side". When she was just over a year old she composed her first song singing, "Side, side, side, other side."

Love, Peace, Joy & Hope

Side side

My son called nursing "side side" because I would ask him if he wanted to switch to the other side. He couldn't say his s's so it sounded more like "shide shide."

Side-rock-nummy

this was the term my sister used with our mom until she was 2 and 1/2.

Sit Down Gink

My youngest daughter used to just guide me to a chair. My middle son used to just pull up my shirt, something I got so used to I didn't notice until I saw my brothers wedding photos. Fran stopped breastfeeding when she was 3 when someone said it was milk, milk she said I don''t like milk and stopped just like that.

Sleepies

My son used to say sleepies when he wanted to nurse.

Snacks

My girls called it "snacks." I nursed my two year old until I was half way through my second pregnancy, right about when I found out I was having twins! I also nursed the twins for two years. They are six and eight and I'm considering becoming a lactation consultant.

Squirt Gun

My 4 year old calls it a squirt gun (I have a strong letdown & the milk can spray quite a distance).

Suck-suck

My 6-year-old daughter decided that Josephine (now 6 months) didn''t call it her "booby" (as I called it) but her "suck-suck".

Sucky

My 3 and 1/2 year old calls it a "sucky"! As in "Give me a "sucky"!"

Summa Milk

My 2 year old calls breastfeeding "Gimme summa milk!" or "I need some!"

Switch Sides / Good Milk

DD calls the milk "good milk". Nursing is "switch sides" so that makes breasts, of course, "sides". :-)
